Palimpsests
(Major and Minor Questions)
2025 Engraved (CNC) intaglio plate (Aluminium) Each A4 (21 × 29.7 × 2 cm)
Untitled/Palimpsests (Major and Minor Questions), 2025, CNC-engraved aluminium intaglio plates, each 21 × 29.7 × 2 cm. The work translates documentary and archival images into engraved aluminium plates through processes of copying, layering, and displacement. Untitled/Palimpsests & Major and Minor Questions were developed in parallel. Both works translate documentary and archival material through different media: engraved image and mechanical voice.
The work translates documentary and archival images from children's fables through a generative data process of copying, layering and displacement. Each engraved plate forms part of a larger, map-like image.
Aluminium intaglio printing plates line the foyer and link gallery. Building on the Palimpsests series (see reference project), the installation expands through Link Gallery additional plates combining historical fable illustrations and documentary material related to the cases performed in the main gallery. The images dissolve into fragmented residual forms accompanying the central installation.
Palimpsests explores control and memory - fables of authority and the limits of legibility. CNC-engraved onto aluminum plates, traces accumulate - fragments of previous works, remnants of storylines, newly inscribed lines. The work evolves through a process of layering and reprocessing: residual materials are reintroduced, overwritten, fused with new input in a continuous cycle. Plates may be removed, replaced, or revisited - new ones appear as others vanish. Each becomes a site of ongoing inscription, forming together a dense visual field - part schematic, part narrative. Through this method, the piece functions as a hybrid apparatus: a living archive and Wunderblock in one. Like a palimpsest, it oscillates between documentation and transformation. Ideologies encoded with moral authority are refracted into new structures - without clear beginnings or ends. There is no linear storyline, no closed sequence - only an open field where unnamed figures surface, disappear, and return in altered form, often echoing narratives from earlier works. Each layer alters the composition: protagonists reappear, transformed, inhabiting new narrative shells. Individual panels contradict, echo, or abruptly rupture one another.
